6 Signs You Need a New Website

Have you been thinking about creating a new website but haven’t pulled the trigger yet? This is something I hear all the time from new clients, so know you are not alone. There are a number of reasons you might need a new website. Maybe your existing website looks dated, it doesn’t have the integrated tools to remarket to leads, or maybe you just don’t have one yet. I have put together a list of six signs that it is time to invest in a new website.

Your Current Website is Out of Date

Every business and I mean every business, needs a good, updated website. If your website was built a few years ago, or longer and hasn’t been updated since, this is a telltale sign that you need a website refresh. Similarly, everyone knows the feeling of landing on a website and immediately noticing that the headshots and photos are very dated. Don’t let that be you!

Not only do you want your website to be current with design trends and have a seamless user experience, but you need the content to be as current as possible. This includes the services you offer, your contact details, and hours of operation. These small details make a cumulative big difference as it relates to your business’ reputation. If your phone number doesn’t work anymore or your contact form isn’t working, you could be losing out on big opportunities.

Don’t give a bad first impression with an outdated website. It is often one of the first places people look when searching for more information. Give them what they are looking for and provide it in a way that adds value.

You Have Had a Lot of Different People Work On It

So often I see clients who have had a handful of different people work on their website. Maybe they have worked with multiple web developers combined with an internal team member making site edits. In my eyes, this falls into the too many cooks in the kitchen mindset. Collaboration is great, but too many different people editing and optimizing your site can leave you with a website that looks a little something like this on the back end:

  • You have too many pages, some of which aren’t relevant anymore but they are still visible to the public.

  • Your website feels slow & clunky.

  • Your link structure is poor. This means the URLs have nonsensical letters and numbers at the end.

  • You don’t know where things are located or how to make edits.

  • There are inconsistencies with SEO setup including how images and pages are labeled.

  • You don’t have a strong sense of what is working well or site analytics.

This is an excellent indicator that it is time for a deep dive report & a plan to either make updates to your current website to streamline things or design a fresh new site that really works for you and your business.

Your Website Isn’t Generating Leads or Conversions

If this statement is true for you, this is the biggest sign that it is time to make some changes. A website should be informational, but it should also be helping you make sales and convert new clients. If your website is failing to do this or even worse, isn’t set up to do this in the first place, you have a huge opportunity in front of you. There are a number of things that we can do to turn your website into a tool for scaling your business. Click here to talk more about how I can help you do this based on your unique business needs.

You find yourself having to explain what you do In great detail

The written copy on your website should be strategically developed to convey what it is that you do. Sharing your website with people should provide them with everything they need to understand your business. If you find that it is still unclear to your audience, I highly recommend partnering with a marketing professional to curate personalized written copy that explains who you are, what you do, and why you do it.

I always recommend working with a copywriter (a service we offer), before launching new copy on your website. The copy you write will always make sense to you because you are the industry expert. The key is making often highly-technical information easy to comprehend for your target audience and convincing them that they are in need of what you have to offer.

It is Expensive to Maintain

When I say expensive to maintain, I am not referring to recurring platform fees for running your website, I mean every time you need an edit made, your developer gives you a sky-high quote for a seemingly small edit. This is a sign that your developer doesn’t have your best interest in mind, or your site has been built in a way that isn’t conducive to edits.

At The Confidant Collective, I ensure that each and every one of my clients is equipped with the tools they need to edit their website on their own. While many of our clients prefer to have us manage edits on their behalf, all websites are built in a way that clients can manage edits should they choose to. When they do reach out for support, web edits can be handled efficiently in a manner that is budget-friendly. My goal is to build a meaningful relationship based on ongoing collaboration in a way that doesn’t break the bank.

You don’t have a website yet

If you don’t have a website, you need one. It’s as simple as that. I see businesses not having a website for two primary reasons. Maybe you have been running a successful business for years and don’t feel like you need one. If this is true for you, I urge you to consider what opportunities you might be missing out on by not having a website. The possibilities are endless when it comes to widening your reach and opening up the door to more opportunities to expand your business. You truly never know who might find you online and submit an inquiry or book a call.

Perhaps you are just starting your business and feel like a website is a good place to start. Let me confirm for you that this is a good intuition! Having a website adds legitimacy and professionalism to your brand, as people tend to be wary of businesses without a web presence. It also serves as a digital resume or business card, educating users and providing them with an easy way to get in touch with you. If you are hesitant about investing in a website, don't be – it's an investment that will pay off in both the short and long term.
