6 Signs Your Marketing Agency is Failing You

There are so many things to consider when it comes to working with a digital marketer for your business, but something that is often overlooked is when to cut ties with your current marketing team or agency. It can be hard to know when it is time and when little issues build up over time, it can be easy to fall into the pattern of excusing their behavior, mistakes, or lack of results. I am the most passionate about making sure my clients get the kind of care they deserve and a personalized marketing strategy to match. That is why I have put together a list of six signs that your current marketing agency or team is failing you. If you agree with even one of these points, it might be time to terminate that contract.

1. They Don’t Take a Genuine Interest in Your Business

Starting off strong, you don’t want someone marketing your business who doesn’t believe in what you do, or even worse, doesn’t care. If they are just in it for the job or the money, the relationship will feel transactional and cold. Any good marketer will say yes to client inquiries who are a good fit for them and no to businesses whose mission doesn’t align with their core values, and that is okay. You are going to be better served by someone who cares about and believes in your mission and the product or service you are bringing to the table.

2. You have Been Passed Off From One Account Manager to Another

This is without a doubt one of the clearest signs that the agency you are working with is suffering. They have a high turnover rate and just as you get comfortable with one account manager, they leave the company and you are passed to someone new and have to start from square one. This boomerang effect will always a negative impact on your marketing strategy. Just as you begin gaining traction, you have to revert back to step one and get this new account manager up to speed on your business and your vision. When you are paying for marketing, you deserve a one-on-one relationship with someone who will be there for the long haul. When you work with The Confidant Collective, you will always have that personal relationship guaranteed. It is at the heart of what we do! You can say goodbye to working with entry-level account managers and rest assured that your marketing plan is being taken care of by a professional who knows exactly how to get you the results you want.

3. It Isn’t Clearly Outlined What You Are Paying For

This one is beyond important. If you are paying a flat rate retainer month over month for a service and it isn’t clearly outlined what exactly they are doing each month, that is a huge red flag. This is especially true if you rarely hear from them and never receive reports on progress along the way. Communication is everything and you deserve to work with someone who is transparent with you both in communication and invoicing.

4. You Have Been Told If You Don’t Invest X Dollars, It Won’t Work

This is a red flag to me for more than a few reasons. First and foremost, it treats every business exactly the same and that simply isn’t the case. Every business has a different product, service, marketing budget, and team. For that reason, every marketing plan should be customized to your unique business. When it comes to marketing, it is always better to be consistent than it is to invest tens of thousands of dollars in a few months and then cancel your services and stop marketing altogether. Remember the saying, “slow and steady wins the race?” This is absolutely true when it comes to high-quality marketing. If someone pulls the “You have to spend 10K per month on ads or else you won’t generate any business” thing on you, please give me a call.

5. They talk about SEO like it is the biggest puzzle the world has ever solved.

If you are paying an agency for SEO as a standalone service, you want to listen closely to this one. First, reference point #3. Do you actually know what you are paying for? Or when you ask, do they just use a bunch of industry terms you don’t understand and make their job sound incredibly complicated? If you have someone managing SEO for you and they make it sound like this insurmountable task that requires very specific skills, but never provide you updates and you aren’t seeing site traffic increase, hold them accountable and find someone to handle your SEO who invites you into the conversation and puts in place strategies that actually work. Bottom line? Be skeptical of people who offer SEO as a standalone service. Just trust me on this one.

6. They Make You Feel Stupid for Asking Questions.

When you are paying someone for support with your business, they should absolutely never demean you or make you feel silly for asking questions. If they seem bothered by your questions or are rude in their response, know that you deserve better. One of the things I love most about my relationships with my clients is the learning process that comes with it for the clients who are interested. While many of our clients prefer to be hands-off and trust that everything will be taken care of, many others like to be involved in the process and learn things along the way. Remember, you are paying for a service. You deserve to be treated with high-quality customer care. You aren’t paying someone to roll their eyes at you for asking another question.
